A group of weird characters from my story, Jarel and his two bodyguards Triffid and Krik. They may not be physically strong, but damn are they sly bastards. They're a species of intelligent plants who have developed advanced technology parallel to being a highly religious community. When reaching a certain age, their heads crack open and spread pollen, which causes them to die afterwards. Females of the species coming in contact with the pollen will root into the ground, bloom, and produce several little bighead plant babies (or whatever you call newborn plants). Many older males use head gear to prevent their head for cracking. This method may extend their life span by 500%
Triffid is the tall, three legged cybernetic one. Jarel is the one with the crown and green coat. And Krik is the heavily pierced, red-eyed one dressed in rags.
Backgrounds are not hard to make if you care to take your time with it. You can make an ok background with pure lineart and colors. You don't need other fancy photoshop effects than the blur tool to make it look distant. I'm just too lazy to take my time making it look decent enough.
I'm gonna do more practice on backgrounds eventually, but I have been working on this drawing for a few days now. And I wanted to test how a sketchy background would look. It's certainly better than no background.
haha, this drawing made my day! its kinda cute, i think it's the expressions that did it for me.
also, i think it might be just me but when i read comics i dont always look at the backgrounds... it does help give the panel a setting etc, so some background is good, im just saying it doesn't have to be complicated/carefully (not lazily) drawn.

Thanks. I'm not really happy with Jarel's expression (guy in the middle) He looks like he's like "Myeh..."
And about the background. When I read comics I rarely notice the background too much. But since I draw, and need to make backgrounds on some occasions, I need to watch them a lot to try and learn how they're made.
its better than anything i can do. when it comes to using computer programs i have lil to no skill, and my drawing skills are also limited. thank goodness for my humor. yeps
A year-and-a-half ago I was also hopeless in computer programs.
Pen and paper + scanner = not so good quality
Pen and paper + scanner + photoshop = better quality (even better after you get some practice with it)
Tablet + photoshop = MOTIVATION! You've just used a lot of money, and you feel obliged to make the best of it. Add that up with creativity, and you get awesome stuffs eventually.
That's how it was with me... Or I like to think I'm heading there as I hardly can call my art awesome yet.
At first I hesitated on buying a tablet because of the price, but trust me when I say that it's worth it. BIG time! But though, I recommend you draw in Photoshop, so you should have a little skill in that. At least you should know how the pen and the layers work. Standard beginner stuff, you learn the rest out of experimenting.
On a final note: Don't listen entirely to me. Do some research on your own first if you decide to buy it.
There are a lot of themes that run through the stock gallery many people have similar ideas but they pull them off in different ways. In this series of newsletters we will look at similar ideas but different outcomes.
Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it.
Each day we will feature 10 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article. In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
When it comes to community spirit, `Rushy is a shining example. From participating in devmeets, to providing positive encouragement to other artists, `Rushy can always be found demonstrating what it really takes to be a true deviant. It's without any hesitation that we are delighted to award the Deviousness Award for July 2009 to `RushyRead More
